It is made of small pieces of the bark. Women beat it with a special tool till it gets really fine and soft and then they glue the pieces together. You can often hear the bang, bang, bang of women beating the tapa in the villages.
Then they paint designs on it usually with brown or dark dye. The dye is also made of special plants. They don't just go to the shop and buy it, they know how to make it all themselves. I think it is very clever.
