When the Europeans came they bargained with Maori to buy land. It wasn�t really fair as Maori had no idea what things were worth. So they would sell large bits of land for some blankets.
I can see how it happens though.
If someone offered me three jars of honey I would sell Waiheke but it may be worth a bit more.
