The Maori brought food with them when they arrived on their canoes. Some grew in New Zealand and some didn�t. The coconut palm didn�t like New Zealand weather.
This is a kumara which is a bit like a potato. It didn�t like New Zealand winters so Maori grew it in the spring, harvested it in autumn and stored it over winter.
They ate some and then planted the others which grew more next year.
