The current New Zealand flag was first used in 1902. The blue is a reminder of the blue sea and sky that surrounds New Zealand.
The four stars of the Southern Cross show the location in the South Pacific Ocean while the Union Flag in the top left corner shows that New Zealand was once a British colony.
Of course the Queen of the United Kingdom is still the official head of state in New Zealand
